I think the biggest problem with our office space is the coffee machines. There are two severe problems that go unnoticed to many eyes:
– The default level of sugar is an insanely high amount of sugar. There is no reason for the default value not to be the healthiest choice (i.e. no sugar). Default values matter
– For changing this, there is only a «more sugar» button, so you have to ask for more sugar! two times !! in order to have your coffee without sugar. There is a huge risk that the cognitive dissonance associated to this action (having to ask for more sugar when you actually want less) causes serious effects in employees brain.I’ve shared this issue with my colleagues many times and I’ve seen that in most cases this is not seen as a big deal. But it is. For people not realizing the problem, I’m now comparing the situation with a hypothetical hotel. Imagine that you book a room, and when you arrive, you’re told by the staff that, by default, they will send two prostitutes to your room at midnight. Not only that; they tell you that, if you don’t want prostitutes, you have to call to the front desk three times from your room; the first one, you have to ask for five prostitutes; the second one, you have to ask that they send to your rooms as much prostitutes as they can find in town. On the third call, you ask if they can send even more prostitutes, and it is at this call when finally they confirm that no prostitutes will be send to your room.
I think that we can agree that this situation is nonsense:
– No hotel should send prostitutes to your room by default. This is an sick, unhealthy default choice
– No one should be forced to ask for more prostitutes when they actually want noneI think the problem is clearer when explained with this example
So as a summary. I demand that:
– Default sugar level in coffee machines is changed to «no sugar» (the healthy choice).
– The machines are reprogrammed in order to have two selectors: one for «more sugar» and one for «less sugar»
